SCI - First for Hunters

Richard Lewellan; President

Born 2/27/1953 in Billings Montana.

I have lived my entire life in Billings Montana. except for 12 years from 1971 to 1983 during this time period I went to pre-med and medical school in Chicago. I also spent 5 years  in Rochester Minnesota at Mayo Clinic doing an orthopedic residency.

I moved back to Billings in 1983 and have been a practicing orthopedic surgeon since then.

I grew up in a family that was very outdoors oriented. My father was Montana-Wyoming State archery champioon in 1956. He shot tournaments with a Bear Kodiak hunting bow (recurve) with cedar shafts. This was instinctive shooting. I can remember archery outings with my dad as a 4 and 5 year old- looking at deer beds and deer tracks. My father had one fall season where he harvested two four point mule deer bucks and a bull elk and only shot three arrows. (recurve instinctive ).

We also rifle hunted big game and hunted upland birds and waterfowl. My two sisters hunted with us as well.

I am passionate about hunting sheep. One of my favorite activities is hunting elk in the forest wtih good tracking snow. My dad and I tracked down a bull elk in the Pioneer Mountains together.

I enjoy hunting new country.

We all used to be involved in proctecting the resources and protecting our right to hunt.

Challenges we all face include our changing environment, the loss of trees in our pine forests of Western Montana and the recent introduction of wolves. If it takes 22-25 elk to feed one wolf over the winter months, it doesn't take many wolves to seriously impact the elk population.

Rob Cline; Chapter Vice President

Rob grew up hunting in Montana. He has been involved in the out of doors since childhood even riding cowboy for the famous CA Cattle Company out of Maudlow Montana as a young man.

Rob's interest in hunting and shooting has taken him to Africa and even to Argentina for one of his favorite sports dove and bird shooting.

Rob is involved with many organizations other then SCI but recognizes the important role SCI plays in the protection of hunting and gun ownership.

Mike Bryant; Secretary

I started hunting jackrabbits with a single shot Stevens 22 in the North Texas mesquites when I was 9 years old and I've been hunting anything that squats in the woods or has fur on it ever since. I came to Montana to hunt and fish and live in the Last Best Place. That was somewhere between 1954 and 1973. Yep I moved around a lot. My wife and I have made Montana our home for these past 37 years and our son is proudly a native Montanan. I found work and have been employed as a petroleum geologist for my entire professional career here in the Northern Rockies. Please don't tell my folks. They think I have a nice job as a piano player in a whorehouse in Miles City.

I have been blessed far beyond reason to have enjoyed all that Montana has to offer plus grand hunting adventures in other places. Besides here at home, I have hunted in Idaho, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Alaska, Victoria Island (Arctic),  Tanzania, and Botswana. Each and every hunt was memorable and each land I've wandered is special.

I have evolved from self avowed gun crank into "just take the rifle and go."  I still have a keen interest in early American history and the Rocky Mountain fur trade. Traditional muzzleloaders have been a specialty ever since I sat enthralled as Fess and Georgie and Thimblerig and Poor Devil wuz a fightin fer freedom in Texas. Played mountain man a lot, once upon a time. "Kin ya skin a griz, Pilgrim,?"

Safari Club International holds a special appeal to me because of (1) its broader scope in the great game fields of the world, and (2) the only organization truly fighting for hunters' righs, here and abroad. Serving on the board of directors on the Montana Chapter gives me another avenue to enjoy what I love to do so much, and maybe I can give a little back somewhere along the path. I also belong to the RMEF, NRA and the NMLRA. I read way to much and shoot way less often.

No Such Place as Too Far, No Such Thing as Too Ready

...Virginia Stratton-Treasurer

Virginia started her hunting career when she and Bill wed at Boschendahl Vineyards in Stellingbosch, Cape Province.

She had never harvested an animal and explained to Bill that she had no desire to kill an animal.

Once she started travelling with Bill she was enticed to go for a red stag in New Zealand, under the careful guidance of Terry Pierson, NZ Wildlife Safaris Virginia managed a one shot kill on a gold medal red stag. That began a desire to further her hunting skills. After numerous trips that have taken her to such countries as Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Russia, Sweden, England and Argentina she has become a seasoned trophy hunter. She now holds the Diamond Inner Circle for SCI Trophy Animals of South America.

Virginia served at treasurer for the Great Falls Montana Chapter at the beginning of their becoming a Chapter of SCI.

Virginia enjoys working with Bill in their taxidermy shop located on their ranch where they mount their own trophies. Also one of her favorite beverages is a glass of good South African Merlot or Cabernet. She has also promised Bill that as soon as he arranges a hunt to Scotland she will learn to appreciate true Highland Single Malt. Bill is scramblling to get the trip put together.

MARY JANE MCKITTRICK;  DIRECTOR

Mary Jane was born into a Montana hunting family and has enjoyed hunting Montana for the many big game species found in our State. She is married to Lynn who has taken Mary Jane to Zimbabwe furthering her hunting experiences. Mary Jane is pictured above with her tremendous leopard taken several years ago on a hunt in Zimbabwe.

She and her husband Lynn own and operate a heavy welding and equipment repair company in Billings. Mary Jane says next to hunting leopard and other dangerous game she enjoys welding and machine shop work, a talent which she inherited from her father.

We are waiting for Mary Jane to give us an up date on more of her hunting experiences.

BRIAN CEBULL, DIRECTOR

Brian Cebull was born in Billings, and has spent most of his life hunting in Montana.   His inspiration to hunt came from his father Rick who took Brian hunting at an early age and who continues to encourage his hunting efforts even to this day.

Brian has been blessed with amazing luck and hunting success.   In the span of 8 years, he drew all three coveted special tags in Montana- moose, sheep, & mountain goat- and took great trophies of all 3 species.  He has been to Tanzania twice now and collected 2 trophy Cape Buffalo plus other species.  He has also hunted Caribou in the Northwest Territories and has chased and bagged nearly every animal that can be legally hunted in Montana.

Eclipsing his hunting luck, Brian’s best fortune is being married to his wife Amy, for 17 years, and being blessed with 2 children, Clay and Dana.  Although she does not hunt, Amy tolerates her husband’s hunting obsession and has accepted her role as a hunting “widow” from early September until December.  Clay has been Brian’s hunting buddy since he could walk and is now old enough to hunt with his own tags in his pocket.  Brian is blessed to be able to spend time in the Montana outdoors with his Dad and his son- three generations of Cebull hunters.

Clay Shreder, Director

By the age of 9 I was driving my fathers Ford pickup and sporting a pump .22 and a .410 shotgun. I can't count the number of days I went out hunting jack rabbits and pheasants in Eastern Montana.  Those days bring back memories of a time when hunting was just something you got to do.  My passion for hunting has taken me to places all over the world and yet, my memories of jack rabbits and pheasants still bring a smile to my face. That same passion has also made me consider the future for all sportsmen.  Without the efforts of people like Bill & Virginia Stratton and other SCI members, where would our hunting rights end up?  I want to say thank you to all of the members of the SCI for your commitment to the hunting tradition.  With the dedication and efforts of organizations like SCI, my great grand son will be driving that Ford pickup on his own jack rabbit adventure.

The photo is of my wife Kimberly and I on our 10 year anniversary.  We were fortunate enough to hunt with Jim Hunter at Glenroy Hunting Lodge in New Zealand.  Now she wants me to celebrate all of our anniversaries in the same fashion.

Bill Fjelstad lives in Billings, Mt. with his wonderful wife 4 young children.  Bill grew up in Hysham on a farm and the outdoors have been a significant part of his life.  He fondly remembers fishing trips with his Dad, and learned to hunt with his grandpa and Great Grandfather.  Bill graduated as Valedictorian in Hysham and went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering at Montana State University.  He worked in Butte as as Engineer for three years before having the opportunity to move back to Eastern Montana and take a job at Brenntag Pacific as a sales rep.  He worked as a sales rep for 6 years and was then promoted to Branch Manager.  Bill has just recently been named District Sales Manager for Brenntag Pacific and has reponsibility for 7 sales reps that cover 6 states.  It was when he moved back to Billings that he met his wife Desiree and they wre married and had four children.  Bill enjoys teaching his children to hunt and fish and to respect the land and its valuable resources.  Bill and Desiree just returned from their first trip to Africa where they were able to hunt plains game with Desiree's grandparents Bill and Virginia Stratton. Pictured is Bill and Desiree with a coveted Copper Springbok.
